Ms. Fujioka Asako (Japan)

Fujioka Asako is the director of the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. She spent her childhood years in New York and Duesseldorf, Germany. She has worked with YIDFF since 1993 after working in film distribution for a while. During her stint in distribution, she executed a distribution model whereby Asian documentaries were distributed in Japan and Japanese documentaries overseas. One of the most important contributions made by Fujioka to the YIDFF was the setting up of the New Asian Currents programme, a collection of films and videos by emerging documentarists from around Asia during the years 1995 to 2003. She has organised several documentary film workshops with young film makers and film enthusiasts in Thailand, Japan and China between 2009 and 2011. She has also been an advisor and selection committee member for the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Network of Documentary (AND) Fund since 2006.
